Sunsport Velo Womens Race Team (WRT) is a collaboration between SunSport Coaching and Velo Espresso, building a professional female cycling team based in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Following on from phenomenal success last season, SunSport Velo WRT is planning this Season with an elite squad up to 12 riders. We now need funds for 2017 whose input will enable the Club and its members to build upon the successful 2016 season.  Last year’s accolades included beating Dame Sarah Storey’s Podium Ambition team in the Matrix Fitness GP Series, with the associated TV coverage on ITV4.  This was incredible and a platform for further media coverage in 2017.  The Team have also had successes throughout the season, with superb results such as in the Halifax Pedalsport Crit (1st and 2nd), Lincoln GP and a podium place at the prestigious Ryedale GP.

The cyclists are regularly seen every week out and about in the catchment. The distinctive jersey has had prominent media coverage on several high profile events with sponsors names and logos being given airtime on the back of the successes.

SunSport Velo WRT provides a 360 degree support to its riders - not only equipment and rides but nutrition, coaching, skills, performance and opportunities for success at a National level.  A corollary aim is to raise the profile of women’s cycling in the UK and give back to the cycling community, attracting more young cyclists in the process.  SunSport Velo is also looking to engage with families and has some funding applications in for consideration.

As well as a stable of road racing, the 2017 season will includes track and cyclo-cross races plus an aspiration to again ride the elite races within the UK and a foreign programme including a European stage race. The Club has an excellent network of contacts at a level that will pave the way into many of these events. The provisional programme includes:

  • Matrix Fitness GP Series (TV coverage on ITV4)
  • National level Criteriums and stage races
  • International events such as Ras Na Mban Tour of Ireland and an overseas stage race
  • Womens Cicle Classic
  • Weekend racing events in Europe
  • Local North West and London events in the UK
  • Track and Cyclocross programme
  • Scottish National championships
  • Swedish National road championships.

In addition, SunSport Velo Women’s Racing Team is increasingly proactive in digital marketing, website, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin so the opportunity to raise brand awareness through any generous support is there for all to see.

Also in 2017, we will be giving back to the community with an educational programme run in the North West and at Manchester Velodrome.  For these, we will erect sponsor’s awnings, provide free coaching to others and give support to novices. During 2016, we have started a SSV club based out of Café Espresso, where we create a fun environment and encourage riders of all abilities to join us to aid their development. All of the management team are keen riders with some of them competing on the amateur circuit so we do understand the need to support cycling at a grass roots level.
